In your own words define
Cultural competence:Understanding that all individuals have their own cultural routines, habits, ideas, and not all belonging to a culture have the same experience

Cultural responsiveness: The ability to adapt one’s own beliefs when taking into account another culture

Cultural humility: Being able to identify your own biases with a willingness to grow and learn more about your own culture and others

Cultural intelligence: The ability to be competent, responsive, and humble in order to collaborate and work with others of different backgrounds, cultures, and identities

Choose one other term that you are curious about-
I am curious what exactly is meant by micro-aggression.

An example of cultural competence could be understanding that just because someone is from Hawaii does not automatically mean that they dance Hula.

An example of cultural responsiveness could be recalling a myth you had heard belonging to a certain culture but hearing how someone else’s interpretation of that myth is different and understanding why. Understanding that many cultures have guests remove shoes when they enter, and it is disrespectful not to.

An example of cultural humility is learning you are wrong about a specific culture's habits or routines and asking to learn more to correct your thinking. Knowing you were rude when you did not take shoes off when entering, or when you always needed to be reminded and making a point to not forget and apologizing if you do.

An example of cultural intelligence could be learning that someone you work with belongs to a culture that celebrates certain holidays that can create a work environment that does not solely focus on one holiday but many and make sure everyone is included so everyone feels as though they are a part of a team. This will create a healthy and productive work environment.

Cultural Safety- Understanding that there is a power imbalance between practitioner and client and this imbalance can hinder therapeutic progress due to client not having a safe space to be open, share, and trust their practitioner.

Advocating on behalf of our patients, being respectful of their overall culture and ideals can help cultivate a safe space.

Creating an environment for open discussion and comfort in order for clients to share about their life and culture allowing the OT to learn more about them and create interventions for them that are appropriate and meaningful. This could be inquiring about their beliefs, values, and incorporating them into session and this can build rapport which is crucial for therapists and their clients
